NCC flatly denies rumours of telecom operators installing 5G cables

15 April 2020 : The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied reports that have been going around on social media claiming that telecom operators are laying 5G fibre optic cables in Lagos and other areas of the nation.

The Executive Vice- Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof Umar Danbatta, said the claims are false. He also mentioned that although they are laying fibre optic cables and other telecom equipment, it is solely from the move of expanding their network infrastructure in order to provide better network coverage to their customers, and not to install the 5G network.

He said “As we speak, any information suggesting or claiming that the equipment being deployed by the network operators is 5G equipment is pure misinformation deliberately orchestrated by individuals bent on creating ill-feelings in the industry.”

He called on Nigerians to disregard the allegations since they are “unfounded and ill-motivated.”
