07 October 2019: Ghana is another country that is under the grasp of Cybercrime, and it is costing them millions. According to Dr Albert Antwi-Bosiako, Adviser to the National Cyber Security “Cyber-attacks promise to escalate in the years to come, especially with the increase in Internet penetration and the massive reliance on ICT devices – such as the use of mobile phones for transactions and interaction by citizens. Mobile phones have facilitated easy access to social networks and to business transactions,” he said. An innovation called Point of Contact (POC), has been launched aimed at suppress cyber crime in the country. He stressed that successful penetration of such systems has a two part effect- as it erodes the confidence people have in the country’s digitalisation measures, along with having massive negative impact on the socio-economic health of Individuals.
Ghana’s payment system also displays the same face: registered number of mobile money accounts have swollen up to 22.99 million in June 2018 from 21.36 million recorded in June 2017.
Eventhough, the amount recorded the previous year ($105million) was more than this year, it is essential to put measures in place to help curb the astronomically growing menace.
